She’s a beauty

Again I appeal to the general public for advice on some new beauty products. And by beauty products I mean, facial soap and moisturizers. What do you use and why? I am a bit picky when it comes to not having a fragrance, etc. and the more natural, the better. Cost is of some concern, but then again, it’s my face! So, I am willing to invest. It’s just one of my pet peeves in life is buying some overpriced, overpromising product that I hate, and it continues to take up premium space on my medicine cabinet shelf.

Help! I implore you!

I use Cetaphil as a facial cleanser.

Also–and please know that I am definitely not a hair and makeup kind of gal–I highly recommend that you check out this book called Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me. It’s an exhaustive rundown of all cosmetics and exactly what’s in them and what you should and shouldn’t avoid.

What was really eye-opening for me was all the info on sunscreens in moisturizers–some of them are worthless and that means that you’re going to end up with premature skin aging and maybe even cancer!

The author has a Web site, too, with a lot of useful info. You can probably find her moisturizer recommendations on her site. Here’s a good place to start: http://www.cosmeticscop.com/learn/sun.asp?ID=163

    Rozanne-
Ok, great. I use Cetaphil, too! How funny. I actually do like it and have been using it for years. I just had a conversation with a co-worker who said she had tried it and didn’t like it because “it didn’t foam up.” That’s exactly what I DO like about it, since I am sure foaming action means more chemicals/additives.

And also, thank you so much for your book recommendation! I am going to check it out now. It sounds like it’s exactly what I am looking for.

This is an ongoing project & topic in our household, Collene…We’re phasing out shampoo & soaps in plastic containers & are mostly shopping at LUSH or we’re dragging out bars of soap from DIY shows.

i use clearasil deep cleanse daily face wash. clearasil recently changed manufacturers, previously it was made by boots a well known company in the UK, it is now made by reckitt benckiser. the name has changed and the formula is slightly different, but it works for me. takes care of biz without overdrying. i checked this product on a site that reports cancer causing ingredients in these sort of products it rated safe.

my fave all-time facial moisterizer is simple daily moisterizing lotion which is very light and non greasy and has no scent - bad news - it is no longer available in the US. so my back up is nivea for men sensitive. why the mans formula? i hate fragrance. it is fragrance free, dye free and alcohol free.it also is SPF 4 and since i spend a lot of time outside in the elements, and not in a mall, i have no problems using a “man” product.

on hot summer days i use lush tea tree water toner on my nasty sweaty face. seems to help clean out sweaty icky pores without over drying. i spray onto a cotton ball and apply it.

i will throw in a few comments on shampoos, now that i am using solid shampoos to cut down on plastic useage. i can recommend the following lush bar shampoos after trying many; 1. hybrid (my fave) and 2. karma. i have a lush order coming with several new items, which i will be happy to report on.

That’s a great idea as well. I really like the thought of cutting down/out plastics. I do like Lush products, though their store is super smelly. But I can definitely hold my nose and go pick up some Hybrid shampoo. Thanks for all of the advice!

I must interject because you know that I am a beauty product junkie (and proud of it). I use Cetaphil cleanser, as well. SO gentle. I HATE fragrance, so it’s perfect in that regard. FYI–I have also tried the Jewel generic brand (Equaline) version of Cetaphil and it works equally well for less dollars. I use Olay moisturizer for sensitive skin. SPF 15. Fragrance free. Love it. I may have to step it up to some sort of wrinkle-reducing anti-aging mumbo jumbo before these lines on my forehead take up permanent residence. I STILL think we should conduct a beauty product swap for all the unused products that I know are sitting in my cabinets. But Anne, we will wait until you come back for that. Promise!!

If you can afford it go for Kiehls products. Specifically I use the Facial fuel moisturizer & facial scrub with exfoliant. I’m not in to splurging on face products but I tried a free sample packet one day and have not turned back sense. The facial scrub contains caffeine and leaves a pepperminty tingly sensation that wakes your face up in the shower. I endorse this stuff 100%.

I have to say the Keihl’s was instrumental in helping me find where my car was towed today. Here’s my story: parked on Armitage Ave. this morning for 10 minutes with my hazards one YES 10 MINUTES I SAY….trying to do good things for my body, on my way to Pilates class, dropping my laptop and crap off and work and lo and behold, 10 minutes later, car is gone from Armitage Ave.
The Keihl’s folks saw my car being towed and let me know that the tow truck said “City of Chicago” which clued me in to go to the website and plug in my license plate #, which, by the way, I only knew because I had a Jiffy Lube coupon in my purse and it had my plate number on it,…typed it in, and of course my car took a trip down to the underbelly of Chicaogo on lower wacker and now I’m $260 poorer than I was this yesterday….yes, stupid-ass mistake on my part to park in a tow zone for 10 minutes……FUCK LINCOLN PARK TO THE MAX…..sorry for the swears, but I’ve had a few cocktails

Swear on, LD, cause that sucks! Sorry to hear that! It’s a major part of why I don’t tread into that area often. Everything always just seems to suck, whether it’s the people, the attitude or the parking.
