A moment of self-reflection
What does it say about me that although our cabinet is chock full of fun, eclectic mugs we’ve collected over the years, 9 times out of 10 I will choose the plain white cafe-styled mug (though not too hearty like a Kopi Cafe mug, but also not too prissy) from Crate and Barrel?
Choice 1 Choice 2

This choice might lead one to immediately assume I am boring. But I think what appeals to me about Choice 2 is a no-nonsense practicality and universal appeal. Meaning, the white not only matches any pajama, but the starkness of the white
really allows the color of your beverage to pop. And also, its slightly-smaller-than-the-standard-mug size means you actually have half a chance of finishing said beverage before it gets too cold to consume.
So, it really all adds up to what I’ve secretly known all along. I’m a genius.

I think the plain white mug is a nice choice. I can’t drink from a mug that’s too thick. It’s like drinking from something from the Flinstone’s era. My favorite mug is the…
“Fat Joe’s World Famous Jade Dragon Tattoo & Exotic Body Piercing” mug.
It’s very Bad-ass.

I agree. As much as I love cafés, I have a hard time with the extra-thick “huskie” lip on the typical café mug.
If I were to have to choose a printed mug here at home, I would choose the Kingdom of Loathing mug or the American Science and Surplus one I purchased recently on an ASS field trip. Or Mandy’s old Bryn Mawr mug with the owls on it.September 24th, 2006 at 12:22 pm. Permalink.

I am weighing in with a plug for the chunky mugs.
Actually I vote for anything that I can delude myself into believing could have been made by a hippie Vermont potter who sold out the corporate world to live the ceramic dream.

nothing says genius like a plain non-chunky, non-prissy mug. i lub my A.S.S. mug. its perfecto. i’ve recently started to come around to some smaller sized mugs of TT’s (which i’m pretty sure also lived in my grandmother’s cupboards) that, due to their slightly Lilliputian proportions, provide me with the actual number of cups that i’ve brewed as quoted by the coffee maker. i am troubled by clear glass mugs and refuse to drink coffee from such, if possible. The “coffee” at Angels is served in these.

Lest I be alienated from all of my beautiful ceramics throwing peeps, I must declare my love of the handmade mug, chunky or otherwise.
The thick-lipped mug that bothers me is the one you’ll find in just about any café—the standard issue off-white mug which actually doesn’t even hold that much coffee because it is that thick.
Can someone please explain my aversion to this shape of mug as well?

That tall mug is nothin’ but trouble. Cats knock it over…lovers knock it over…before you know it, you’re washing the coffee off your keypad in the shower. I wouldn’t even steal that mug from a co-worker.

i am in complete agreement on the tall ones…bad! and i don’t even drink many beverages in mugs…although, before AW, i barely owned any other type of drinking apparatus. i drank water, juice, and everything else from mugs passed down from my parents. sheesh! hello, sturdy glassware!

oh my god, I LOVE the huskie mug!! I guess that gives away my amateur coffee-drinker status. My fave is a thick-lipped one I have from Dean and Deluca in NY. (of Felicity fame!)
My favorite part of coffee is the cream and sugar and no, I don’t need to have a cup everyday, and yes, sometimes I order a tall raspberry mocha, and yes, coffee often makes my tummy hurt, so you can all hate me now.
BUT, breakfast is my favorite meal and the idea, the smell, the routine and the grown-up-ness of it all reels me in.
